The year in pictures

By Ben Sclair · November 12, 2014 ·

Aircraft have to be the most picture-worthy mode of transportation (an objective opinion if I’ve ever read one) — and we’d like to see your best shots of 2014. These should be your photos you’ve taken in 2014.  I can’t think of a better way to cap off 2014 than sharing your great pictures in our […]

Other People's Airplanes video of Tora Tora Tora

With Veterans Day circled on the calendar, the crew at Other People’s Airplanes, put the finishing touches on their Tora! Tora! Tora! video from AirVenture 2013. Tora! Tora! Tora! is a recreation of the December 7, 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii flown by the Commemorative Air Force.

LA Times opines about Santa Monica Airport

By Ben Sclair · November 10, 2014 ·

We’ve been saying it for years. But it’s nice to hear the mainstream media pick up the argument. The Los Angeles Times editorial board said, with regard to Santa Monica Airport, “Open to private business and recreational aircraft, it relieves Los Angeles International Airport of some smaller plane traffic. Flight schools, airplane maintenance, charter jet […]

Video: Cloud Safari – Hike and Fly

By Ben Sclair · November 7, 2014 ·

Jumping off a mountainside under the canopy of a paraglider has to be an incredible experience. Doing so in Chamonix, France even more so. Questionable IMC descent aside, this 3+ minute “hike and fly” video is stunning.

Vanity Fair: The Human Factor

By Ben Sclair · November 6, 2014 ·

We typically steer clear of airline-related topics in General Aviation News. But for William Langewiesche’s feature – The Human Factor – on the Air France 447 in Vanity Fair, I’ll make an exception. As sophistication and automation in all aspects of aerospace has developed over the past few decades our role as pilots must be continuously […]

Ranger Airfield Fly-In is an ole-fashioned Texas fly-in

By Ben Sclair · November 4, 2014 ·

RANGER, Texas – Ranger Airfield turns 103 years-old this fall. To celebrate, organizer Jared Calvert and friends organized an Oct. 3-4 fly-in. “We brought in about 200 aircraft,” said Calvert. Aircraft of all shapes and sizes showed up for the good ole-fashioned fly-in. If these six images aren’t enough, swing by our Ranger Airfield Fly-In Flickr album to […]

Is Facebook changing how you consume news?

By Ben Sclair · October 28, 2014 ·

Facebook. It’s social. It’s mobile. It’s ubiquitous. It’s free. What’s not to love about Facebook? [That’s sarcasm, by the way.] Facebook “drives up to 20% of traffic to news sites,” reports Ravi Somaiya in a recent New York Times story. On the General Aviation News website, since the start of 2014, we’ve seen just under […]

Video: Cameron Airshow 2014

By Ben Sclair · October 24, 2014 ·

If you like airshow smoke, lots of noise and hotshot aerobatics, you might want to check out this video of the Cameron Airshow. Scott Slocum from Aero Media Group sure knows how to handle a camera.
