Grant awarded to project designed to eliminate 100LL

By General Aviation News Staff · August 24, 2007 ·

Tom Ehresman, an inventor from Loveland, Colo., was awarded a 2007 Lindbergh-Lycoming Grant for his project to eliminate the use of leaded avgas. Ehresman is developing a direct injection igniter fuel nozzle that would allow jet fuel, diesel and other types of fuels to be used in high-performance aircraft piston engines. Ehresman, chosen from 150 […]

B-17 IS THE GREATEST

By General Aviation News Staff · August 10, 2007 ·

My vote is the B-17 Flying Fortress (The Greatest Airplane Ever, June 8 issue). This airplane was derived around 1934-1935 from the DC-3 when we needed longer range. (When we needed longer range for the Pacific, we built the B-29.) The B-17 was a beautiful machine and to the surprise of many people it was […]

THE BEST PART ABOUT THE DC-3

By General Aviation News Staff · August 10, 2007 ·

I’m a retired USAF fighter pilot of over 20 years and flew most of them in the inventory from the F-80 to F-105/106 and F-4E. I have also flown many other military and civilian aircraft from the J-3 Cub to the B-52; and several flights in the C-47. What I wanted to inject is no […]

IF IT AIN’T BROKE DON’T FIX IT

By General Aviation News Staff · August 10, 2007 ·

Concerning your article on Lockheed Martin’s debacle on our flight service stations (Frustrations abound on FSS, June 8 issue), I, being from the country and spent a lot of time hunting, had an old saying: “Don’t shoot a running dog” or in city-folk’s language: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” We had an operating […]

UNLEADED AVGAS: YOU’D HAVE TO BE INSANE TO OPPOSE IT

By General Aviation News Staff · August 10, 2007 ·

Your fuel and lubricant expert Ben Visser recently wrote in his column that it would be insane to try and develop an unleaded replacement for 100LL (Unleaded avgas: You’d have to be insane to try to develop it, June 22 issue). What’s to develop? Leave out the lead and 100LL automatically becomes 95UL. Since virtually […]

KUDOS FOR OUR OIL & ENGINE EXPERTS

By General Aviation News Staff · August 10, 2007 ·

Just thought I would drop you a note. I have been reading your articles in Visser’s Voice and Ask Paul and enjoying them. Keep up the good work. Our 41 PA31s are running well at the moment. DOUG CHANDLER Ameriflight

the buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

By General Aviation News Staff · August 10, 2007 ·

“Getting into light sport after losing your medical is like rediscovering sex.” — Mike Fletcher, Light Sport Airplanes West “It is clear to us there is a great need for this aircraft as we strive to drive down the cost of flying and learning to fly.” — Jack Pelton, Cessna’s chairman, president and CEO on […]

1940 Air Terminal Museum raffles off antique aircraft

By General Aviation News Staff · August 10, 2007 ·

How would you like to be the proud owner of a beautifully restored, airworthy antique aircraft — and only pay $50 for it? It could happen, if you hold the winning ticket in the 1940 Air Terminal Museum raffle. The museum, located at William P. Hobby Airport in Houston, is raffling off a 1947 Cessna […]

Fossett earns sailplane speed record

By General Aviation News Staff · August 10, 2007 ·

When record-making Steve Fossett sets yet another one, some people shrug. He has set many a record in powered and un-powered aircraft, balloons, sailboats – if it moves, Fossett may have set a record in it. Early last month, he and New Zealand soaring expert Terry Delore set a speed record for sailplanes, gliding over […]
