Picture of the Day: Arctic Tern in a cornfield

By General Aviation News Staff · April 17, 2022 ·

Dean Carrell submitted this photo and note: “My 1982 Arctic Tern in a cornfield grass strip during a trip I took to a friend’s in Minnesota. I’m 74 and fly four or five times a week. I live in Worland, Wyoming, surrounded by mountains and love this type of flying.”

William Hunt submitted this photo and note: “The Imperial War Museum at Duxford, England, has many artifacts that are displayed as found. Notable is the tail of a German aircraft with a pair of holes in the middle of the swastika. If you looks closely, the holes are square rather than round. The museum says that they were made by a pickaxe rather than a gun. To paraphrase a favorite movie: “This wasn’t business. This was personal.”

While the Thunderbirds claimed top billing at the 2022 SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Expo, some of the most interesting flying at the show takes place in Paradise City, home to a grass runway and light-sport aircraft, ultralights, and the STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) Demos. In this photo, Megan Vande Voort captures an Evolution Rev taking off — a photo she named “and she’s up.”
