I recently purchased this old gal from a wonderful couple in Willis, Texas. Keith and Kim were sorry to see her leave and chose us as the next caretakers.”

Picture of the Day: It’s an uphill journey

Nathan Mackey submitted this photo and note: “An H-295 Helio Super Courier from JAARS Inc. in Waxhaw, N.C., taxis up to the top of Strawberry Ridge airstrip in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The airstrip, which is just 1,150 feet long, has a significant slope on the last half of Runway 8. The pilot must basically employ full power to get to the top of the airstrip, turn around, and take off downhill. This strip and others like it are used as a ‘final exam’ for JAARS pilots who are completing their training and then will await their overseas assignments.”

Chris Bena submitted this photo and note: “It was a smooth, CAVU day at 8,500 feet over the Alaska Range. Twin Lakes in the Lake Clark National Park was home to famed Dick Proeneke of ‘One Man’s Wilderness.’ Redoubt Volcano, an active volcano, can be seen lording over this part of the mountain range.”

Picture of the Day: Flying Oz

By General Aviation News Staff · September 9, 2025 · Leave a Comment

Jeff DeFreest submitted this photo and note: “On a recent Saturday morning, we flew the Cessna 170B around northwest Arkansas and landed to check out the grass strip at Richland Creek. About 1/2 hour later we heard a big radial fly over, and then saw a few more planes on approach. Our solitude was broken, it became a fly-in. It was fun to meet all the other weekend flyers, and then to see that beautiful T6 pull in next to me. I’m very grateful for the Fly Oz enthusiasts, and the Recreational Aviation Foundation keeping up these backcountry airstrips!”

A friend took me up in his 1957 Cessna 172, soaring over various regions of the state. He also introduced me to five challenging runways at Banks Ranch. The image showcases three of those runways at Banks Ranch.”
