Picture of the Day: Idaho Backcountry Visit

By General Aviation News Staff · July 6, 2026 · 1 Comment

Tom Gresham submitted this photo and note: “A Cessna 182 sits on Bernard Airstrip on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho’s Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area. This stop was part of a multi-day training session in backcountry flying. Many of the airstrips in the backcountry are long enough for a Skylane, but density altitude remains a constant factor.”

Gord McNulty submitted this photo and note: “It was overcast, unfortunately, when I visited the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, recently. A de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver, of Killarney Air Services, stood out at the dock on the St. Mary’s River, but fencing around the ramp made a photo more challenging. Fortunately, I had just enough space, and my telephoto lens, for a picture of the photogenic aircraft at a good angle. The iconic Beaver was first flown in 1947. In 1987, the Canadian Engineering Centennial Board named the Beaver one of the top 10 Canadian engineering achievements of the 20th century.”
