Isaac Mattingly submitted this photo and note: “This photo was taken in July 2023 during practice at the 2023 Sioux Falls Airshow where the plane flying is the very same C-47 “That’s All Brother” that led the D-Day invasion of Normandy. The Jumper in the photo is a member of the SOCOM Para-Commandos jump team. The team is made up different members from different branches of the Special Operations Command (SOCOM).”
Photo of the Day
Picture of the Day: A work of art
David Hayes submitted this photo and note: “I commissioned an artist to paint my Cirrus landing at my summer home at Mountain Air (2NC0), the highest runway east of the Mississippi.”
Picture of the Day: Tail beacon as sunrise
Rusty Eichorn submitted this photo and note: “The sunrise did a pretty good job as the tail beacon this morning. N18DP at Northbound Seaplane Base (5MN6) on Pokegama Lake in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.”
Picture of the Day: Best $50 I ever spent
Kurt Winker submitted this photo and note: “The 1942 J-3 Cub I won in a raffle held by the Dakota Territory Air Museum — best $50 I ever spent. Its life started by going directly into the Civilian Pilot Training Program for World War II.
Reading through all the original logbooks was amazing, as every flight back then was put into the aircraft logs. This photo was taken the evening before I flew the J-3 from Mid Valley Airpark (E98) in Los Lunas, New Mexico, to McKinney National Airport (KTKI) in Texas. About 520 nm of flying at ground speeds between 40 and 75 knots. It took all day and four fuel stops. What a great way to spend a day!”
Picture of the Day: Sunset in paradise
Abigail Dang submitted this photo and note: “Flying in Hawaii means constantly gorgeous views, no matter what time of day, but sunset is a particular favorite of mine. My student and I completed an RNAV approach at Kalaeloa Airport (PHJR) just before sunset, after which the procedure would not be permitted.”
Pictures of the Day: It’s what I do
William Vergonet submitted this photo and note: “I come into the hangar daily and see the workload in front of me. After the shockwave subsides, I remember if things didn’t break I wouldn’t be needed.”
Picture of the Day: Evening landing at KUES
Don Muehlbauer submitted this photo and note: “After a long summer of hazy weather, Aug. 31 2023, brought a beautiful clear evening. Note the sheen on the cowling of the RV-12 and the Approach lights on Runway 10 at Waukesha County Airport (KUES) in Wisconsin. I am a CFI, so a student, just about ready to solo, was flying the plane.”
Picture of the Day: Halloween Cub
Rob Stapleton submitted this photo and note: “A newly rebuilt Super Cub by Alaska’s Acme Cub takes off from the Lake Hood gravel strip in Anchorage, during the autumn Birch foliage. The Super Cub is sporting flames from the engine cowling and dayglow green powder coated fuselage tubing, trim including VGs and jury struts with all the modifications needed for off-airport operations. The Cub is flown by student pilot Emilie Williams and her CFI behind a Lycoming O-360 180-hp engine. The Cub has earned a local name as the Gangster Cub.”
Picture of the Day: Cadet glider flights
Douglas Dutton submitted this photo and note: “Evening glider flights at the Civil Air Patrol’s North Central Region Glider Flight Academy in Yoder, Kansas.”
