Stu Tracy submitted this photo and note: “Transitioning through Class B over Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (KPHX) in Arizona at 5,500 feet on a New Year’s Eve breakfast flight from Marana Regional Airport (KAVQ) to Phoenix Deer Valley Airport (KDVT). The plane is a 1973 Cessna Cardinal 177B we have owned for 34 years. Great way to end the old year.”

SPAD for two

While the French SPAD single-seat fighters were ace-makers, disappointing performance and maneuverability in the two-seat derivatives failed to justify their use as a fighter. Instead, the two-seat versions earned a niche in the war as bomber and reconnaissance aircraft.

Would this airport be safer without a control tower?

I’m very disappointed in how the Tower was not helpful in my situation. Even on a normal day, that controller seems overwhelmed and stressed out, spacing airplanes on 5+ mile finals, yelling at planes to widen the base leg to abnormal sizes, then when I experienced my problem, gives me instructions contrary to what I felt was the safest course of action and unhelpful overall.
