After a short hop, I am at my home base again, Whiteman Airport (KWHP) in Los Angeles, and all is well. I do not know yet that this will be the last time I have taken to the skies as PIC. After more than 30 years of flying it was over. Just like that.

Pilot forgets to remove tow bar before takeoff
The pilot’s inadequate preflight inspection, which resulted in his inadvertent departure with the tow bar connected to the nose wheel, and the low approach while returning to the airport, which allowed the tow bar to contact trees.

Truthfully, the general aviation market and environment is as good or better than it has ever been. Our challenge remains, however. The pilots who attend safety seminars are by and large the pilots who least need the refresher. The pilots who don’t attend safety seminars are the pilots who present the greatest threat to the rest of us.
