Where is 1Z1?
Reviewing my logbook made it clear why I began to include more detailed information about my flights. These logbook entries are a window into my past, a written record of my 30-plus years of flying, and the stories they tell are important to me. Through them I can relive flights with friends and family as we explored new and challenging places. Entering just an airport identifier and a date doesn’t tell the whole story.
Backcountry Maine airfield reopens
A new agreement makes the Recreational Aviation Foundation responsible for the recreational use of the Red Pine airfield, which is in the St. John River Forest in the backcountry of Maine.
EAA Education Center opens
The $6.2 million project was funded via a capital campaign separate from EAA member dues.
Daher expands in North American
With the Stuart facility, North America has now become Daher’s second largest region after its home country of France.
CFI doesn’t listen when student says engine doesn’t sound right
I think that it is important to heed the alerts from all of those on board. I could have paid more attention to my student mentioning the noise from the engine. I might have been able to detect an issue before we were en route.

Will Luggar submitted this photo and note: “First flight after an eight-month build of a Carbon Cub EX3! It’s at home flying off a private 1,600-foot grass runway in northern Minnesota. It took around 700 hours to build the EX3, which features a Garmin G3X and autopilot. It is powered by an experimental 363i Lycoming engine, which produces 186 hp.”
