The AOPA Air Safety Institute (ASI) has released two videos in its Beyond Proficient: IFR Series. “Whether you’re instrument-rated or recently enrolled in instrument training, the videos offer tips and tricks to master complex instrument flying aspects,” officials said.
Video provides early analysis of Winter Haven mid-air collision
On March 7, 2023, a Piper Warrior and a Piper J-3 Cub on floats collided over Lake Hartridge, just east of Winter Haven Regional Airport (KGIF) in Winter Haven, Florida. Sadly, all four people on board the airplanes perished in the accident.

“Beyond Proficient: Stabilized IFR Approach captures the critical phases of flying an instrument approach from approach clearance to landing or transitioning to a missed approach,” said ASI Senior Director Paul Deres. “In addition, the video offers practical tips on how to identify and deal with task saturation and regain situational awareness on the approach.”

The Mooney had been cleared for the GPS approach to Runway 14 at KGAI. Weather conditions were poor with a 200-foot overcast and 1.25 miles visibility in mist.

Air Safety Institute provides early analysis of training accident
On Oct. 6, 2022, a Cessna 172 crashed during a training flight at the Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport (KPHF) in Newport News, Virginia. No one on the ground was injured, however, the CFI died in the accident. A student pilot and another student onboard the Cessna were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
GA accidents drop in 2020
Overall accident rates were down, with sharp decreases in weather-related accidents and maneuvering accidents, which reached a 10-year low.
