Another first in flight for Dayton
Four students became the first to earn bachelor degrees centered around aviation at a community college in Dayton, Ohio.
2021 FAA UAS Symposium continues as virtual event
Registration is now open for both episodes, which will include experts from industry, academia, international aviation authorities, and the U.S. government who will discuss key areas for the future of the drone community, including the operations over people rule, remote identification, airspace authorizations, waivers, the Part 107 small UAS rule, changes in hobbyists’ drone operations, and other policies and regulations.
Aspiring drone pilots can now train remotely at Embry-Riddle
Ian Kerr, who is in a master’s program in aeronautics, recently flew a $5,000 Embry-Riddle drone located in Idaho to perform an aerial survey of a cemetery from his home in Seattle. Another crew member participating in the flight, Casey McGuire, was located at his home in Las Vegas.
Video: A close-up look at a volcano
Reuters has just posted a short video to YouTube showing the moment a drone crashes into an erupting volcano in Iceland. The drone captures stunning images of lava flowing out of the volcano before it crashes. The drone pilot then comes on the video, explaining how difficult it is to fly a drone in these conditions. Check it out below:
Drones added to Hurricane Hunter fleet
Adding drones to the Hurricane Hunter fleet will help NOAA improve our understanding of hurricanes, ultimately providing new observations that could help save lives.
Official Drone ASRS Report form introduced
“Examples of reported UAS incidents include events in which wind, weather, or equipment are important factors, conflicts between manned and unmanned aircraft, and operational mistakes that may endanger persons or aircraft. Commencing with knowledge extracted from ASRS reports, solutions or preventive measures can be developed to mitigate hazards and threats.”
NASA takes first steps to create drone flight corridors
NASA has created a partnership with The Longbow Group to begin the first steps toward establishing beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) flight-corridors for unmanned aerial system (UAS) flight tests in Hampton Roads, Virginia. The ultimate goal: Use drones to test flight corridors for larger Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) vehicles.
Colorado high school launches drone education program
The Unmanned Safety Institute’s safety certification curriculum will be the basis for the Buena Vista High School program. Once complete, students will have earned an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate and an industry-recognized safety certification.
