Build A Plane, a non-profit organization that helps teach science, technology, engineering and math to young people by having them build or restore real airplanes, is tapping into the popularity of the online auction site eBay.
Starting late last month, the organization began auctioning off a wide variety of one-of-a-kind items, from aviation collectibles and tropical vacations to VIP dinners with aviation celebrities.
According to Build A Plane officials, new items will be continually added to the special eBay auction site, making this an on-going fundraising effort. All proceeds go directly to support the organization’s charitable aviation education efforts.
“This is a great way to support kids getting more exposure to aviation,” says Build A Plane President and Founder Lyn Freeman. “Build A Plane has more than 70 projects in schools across the United States where kids are learning by building real airplanes. The proceeds from this unique fundraiser, something totally new and different for aviation, will help us continue to help kids.”
Build A Plane solicits aircraft donations, from kits to project airplanes to those that need major restorations, and then redirects those airplanes to high schools and youth groups across the country at no charge.
Build A Plane is working in a partnership with the FAA to promote aviation education. It also is part of the Thomas W. Wathen Foundation, recently designated as a National Center for Aviation Education.
