Go-around goes bad for student pilot

By NTSB · March 13, 2015 ·

The student pilot was attempting to land the Cessna 172 at Gila Bend, Ariz., when the airplane drifted to the left.

He applied full power for a go-around. The airplane continued to the left during the go-around, hitting a tree on the left side of the runway, and then crashed.

The pilot received minor injuries.

The NTSB determined the probable cause as the student pilot’s failure to maintain control during an attempted go-around.

NTSB Identification: WPR13CA152

I have been a CFI for almost 50 years, I was trained at 2 local airports by a fabulous group of dedicated airmen, not at one of the big, overpriced, CFI mills where CFIs learn nothing. My students can do balked landings and go arounds, with their eyes closed, before they can solo. These new CFIs, from the CFI mills not only cannot perform these and many other maneuvers, they are incapable of teaching them.
