Matt, if I may jump in… I think what this great group of people are saying is not that you should not take your kids flying… It’s that you should be very picky when you take them flying… Conditions needs to be above “perfect”.
In my first 200 hours I never went over a 25min “around the airport” flying with my kids, and I made sure I have another adult/grownup to assist if needed… Just in case… So no XC flying just yet… Go short and on absolutely beautiful days, and enjoy!
nothing more rewarding then flying with the family, and it will push you to learn and do more… Instrument rating here we come!
Liad.
As a student preparing to take my check ride I have had similar thoughts about NOT taking my friends/family out for a ride as soon as I have my certificate.
However that begs the question…How much experience is enough before you do that?
I think it could be argued that while Matt may not have been “high time” he was proficient, more so than someone who only flies once a month considering he had been flying frequently leading up to his check ride and flight with his kids.
Looking forward to my first flight with the family :^)
I agree with Guido’s comment but I would like to say to Matt… Congratulations and welcome into the world of aviation. It can truly change your life. Good Job!!!
That’s all cute and memorable but I’d seriously go out and get a lot more hours under your belt before flying your family around. Just sayin’…..
I did the exact same thing fairly soon after my check ride (with no bad consequences). Looking back, 1000+ hours later, I completely understand and agree with Guido’s comment. Even after hearing that I now had a “license to learn”, I didn’t realize at the time how green and unexperienced I was just after getting my private certificate.
Fully agree. You need a lot more time before you load your precious cargo in an airplane. And leave the damn cell phone/camera in your pocket. When will this silly “selfie” craze ever end!
Just for the record, I didn’t take the picture. My other son took the picture from the front seat while I was flying the plane. I had no idea that this would be such a controversial picture. I had 80 hours at the time of the flight, and that was mostly compressed into the last couple of months preparing for my checkride. We flew at airports that I had landed at many times (over 250 landings at that point).
He didn’t take a selfie or a picture inflight. Give the guy a break he just took pictures of his kids while on the ground.
I’m very happy for yyou .Were do you fly from?
