Picture of the day: More extraordinary contrails

By General Aviation News Staff · June 14, 2016 ·

After the posting of Tomas Daniska’s photo of interesting contrails, Bob Cady sent in this photo, explaining: “On the afternoon of New Years Eve day 2014, I saw an extraordinary number of contrails, well over 20. We get a lot of air traffic here in southeast Virginia but never before like this.”

“That itself was interesting, but I had never before (or since) seen shadows of contrails on clouds above them. I snapped a number of pictures and this one shows the shadows most dramatically.”

It’s good to see that no one is squawking about “Chem” trails !

Converging contrails served to validate my celestial navigation when sailing to Hawaii back in the1970s. GPS didn’t exist then, so seeing contrails from planes flying from Seattle and from LA converging as I neared the islands was a huge relief. Cool picture by the way.

Obviously, the shadows are projected onto the clouds that are between you and the aircraft. The clouds are not above the con trails.
