Where’s Jamail? Dallas

Jamail Larkins, the FAA ambassador behind the DreamLaunch Tour and the founder of AviationStart, a database of aviation resources and scholarships, has sent in a debrief from his latest stop on the tour.

The 2026 Dallas stop was hosted at the Henry B. Tippie National Aviation Education Center at the Commemorative Air Force Museum, according to Jamail.

“It ended up being a really strong example of the workforce and economic impact aviation education programs, like the DreamLaunch Tour, can generate for the local general aviation industry in cities,” he said.

The event drew 278 aspiring aspiring aviation professionals between the ages of 16–30, said.

“They were very serious about pursuing aviation careers, but like many people entering the industry for the first time, they lacked clear guidance on how to begin,” he said.

One of the most popular programs during the event was Tango 31, a mentorship initiative founded by the late Kevin Lacey, he said.

“The program allows students to work on refurbishing aircraft, and provides opportunities for those seeking an A&P or becoming a pilot. For aspiring pilots, the program gives participants access to a fleet of training aircraft where they essentially pay only for the cost of fuel,” Jamail reported. “Because of that structure, many students end up completing their private pilot certificate for less than $2,000, which is absolutely incredible compared to the typical cost of flight training today.”

During the tour stop, students were also connect with “real scholarship opportunities,” he continued.

For example, the Commemorative Air Force offers a student membership program where young aviation enthusiasts can join a local CAF squadron, he said. After participating for a year, they become eligible for scholarships of up to $19,000, which can cover the full cost of earning a private pilot certificate.

Another example is Breaking Down Barriers, a program founded by Doug Parker, the former CEO of American Airlines, that funds selected students all the way through their Certified Flight Instructor rating.

The opportunities weren’t just for high school or college students either, he noted.

“We also had several aviation companies present who were looking for future employees,” he said. “Embraer Aircraft, which is building a $70 million maintenance facility in the Fort Worth area, received more than 10 potential A&P applicants directly from the event. Zipline, the drone delivery company, was also there discussing emerging aviation technology careers.”

Jamail added that one aspect of the DreamLaunch Tour that many people miss is the economic impact these events can generate locally.

“When we recruit aviation-curious people, show them how to get started, and connect them directly with flight schools, A&P programs, universities, and employers, those introductions often turn into actual enrollments and careers,” he said. “For example, two Dallas flight schools estimated that six students who attended the event are now enrolling in their training programs — representing more than $600,000 in potential flight training revenue. In many cities, we reach more than 10 new students who start flight training, which generates over $1 million in economic activity in the local general aviation ecosystem.”

That’s not exclusive to DreamLaunch, but many aviation programs, he added.

“That’s a huge reason why more local aviation communities need to engage in these type of events and programs,” he said. “Not only is it critical to help sustain aviation’s workforce, but it can also be a direct pipeline for revenue growth.”

Organizing events that truly move the needle on workforce development is a lot of work, but the reason the tour continues is the feedback from families, he said.

“My favorite moment of the day was at the end of the Dallas event where I usually have the opportunity for one-on-one sessions with aspiring aviation professionals,” he said. “One family came up to me and said ‘we’ve been on this journey for over a year and by far the most and best information we’ve gotten was today.’ That meant a job well done for the entire AviationStart team.”

“For me, moments like that mean the mission is working,” Jamail concluded.
