New Non-Profit Designed to Help First Generation Pilots

By General Aviation News Staff · July 23, 2026 · Leave a Comment

A new non-profit organization, First Generation Pilots (FGP), made its debut at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2026.

The new organization is designed to support aspiring pilots who are the first in their families to pursue aviation careers through mentorship, networking opportunities, scholarships, and career development initiatives.

“Aviation can be difficult to navigate without guidance from someone who’s done it before,” officials said at the launch. “Challenges include high financial barriers, a lack of mentorship, and limited professional networks, all of which are essential for success in the industry.”

Originally founded as a student organization in 2024 at the University of North Dakota, the UND First Generation Pilots grew to become one of the largest student organizations on campus, totaling over 300 active members and establishing a $10,000 scholarship program in just two years. The UND group is now officially recognized as the first chapter of the FGP non-profit.

First Generation Pilots was founded by Lucas de Jager, Augustas Senuta, Logan Laier, and Tyler Svrusis, who plan to establish a scholarship program, develop a nationwide mentorship network, and expand its reach through collegiate chapters across the country.

“Many students entering aviation who do not have connections in their family lack a clear roadmap for navigating the profession,” said Lucas, founder and Chair of First Generation Pilots. “FGP was created to help bridge that gap and ensure those pilots receive access to the guidance, community, and opportunities needed to succeed.”

FGP is seeking mentors, industry partners, and donors interested in expanding opportunities for aspiring pilots and first-generation aviators. The organization is also seeking students interested in launching FGP chapters at colleges across the country.
