AeroSouth Technology, a provider of drag-reducing components for RVs and other homebuilt aircraft, recently introduced a line of tailwheel fairings.
In the year following the company’s licensing of composite wheel and empennage fairings from Sky Designs Aero, officials said they focused on streamlining sales, production, and shipping.
“The effort paid off with a 50% productivity gain in less than 12 months,” said President Kent Misegades. “This has given us more time to pursue new drag-reduction components for RVs and other homebuilts.”
The company has developed five different tailwheel fairings for the most common tailwheel hardware used on homebuilts: Van’s OEM (right-angle) fork, the Condor2, Screaming Eagle and Doug Bell designs from Flyboy Accessories, and the JDAir tailwheels.
The new tailwheel fairings are self-aligning and install with no tailwheel modifications needed, according to Misegades.
He said they expect customers to see “a solid two-knot gain, at a cost of $250-$300 and the effort of a few minutes to install.”
“It may not sound like much, but the cumulative effect of multiple aero mods such as this makes a difference in speed and fuel consumption,” he said.
All five designs are in production in the company’s North Carolina facility and can be shipped within two weeks from order, he added.
