Volunteers with the Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF) recently held a work party at Lost Creek Airstrip (MI45) in the Huron-Manistee National Forest in Michigan.
Before work began, RAF Michigan Liaisons Tanmoy Ganguly and Scott Anttila met with U.S. Forest Service officials.
“We had a very constructive discussion about what the RAF does and what we envision for future amenities at Lost Creek Airstrip,” Ganguly reported.
The August work weekend attracted 16 aircraft and 20 volunteers, including new Michigan Ambassador Ryan Minnick, Michigan Ambassador Ehsan Hamtaei, and Indiana Liaison Bill Steinmetz. The crew was joined by nearby residents who donated their time, tools, and machinery to help.
The crew filled and seeded ruts, rolled and mowed Runway 18/36, the longest of the two turf runways, and painted the windsock pole.
“We had a very successful event,” Ganguly said. “It far exceeded our expectations in terms of participation and results.”
The site features a fire ring, porta potty, water connection, electric hookup, and dark skies at night, according to RAF officials.
“Visitors will not find the ‘Lost’ creek, but the Au Sable River is a few miles away,” they added.
