The Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF) has reopened High Rock Airfield in western Maryland to backcountry aviators following a land donation from the estate of the late aviator Bob Armstrong.
Located along the North Branch of the Potomac River, approximately 85 nautical miles northwest of Washington, D.C., the 1,700-foot turf airstrip was created out of former farmland and named after an adjacent 1,000-foot overlook.
“We are humbled to have become the stewards of this special place, and will honor the Armstrong family’s legacy by creating a welcoming place to enjoy the fellowship of backcountry aviation,” said RAF President Bill McGlynn.
Armstrong and his father, Lt. Col. Harold Armstrong, based multiple vintage aircraft on the property before Bob Armstrong passed away in 2024.
According to RAF officials, volunteers worked to license the field with the FAA and the State of Maryland to prepare the site for public recreational access.
Pilots planning to fly into the airstrip for camping, fishing, or outdoor recreation must first review the required safety briefing and airfield guide before arrival.
