The pilot’s unstable approach, which resulted in a hard landing and impact with a runway threshold light. Also causal was the flight instructor’s failure to take remedial action to prevent the hard landing.
Picture of the Day: To the rescue
Timothy Washick submitted this photo and note: “Late on a Friday when you think you’re good to fly back home, your trusty 1959 182B has a front flat tire. The big shop on the field was closing for the weekend, and could not get me until Monday.
Camarillo Aircraft Service was happy to help a stranded pilot. They jacked up the nose and installed a new tire and tube. Camarillo Aircraft Service is pilot friendly and is happy to help their stranded fellow pilots. A big shot out to the A&P mechanics that help all of us fly home safe.”

You can request unique training opportunities from ATC. Things like light gun signals. If you’re a CFI you should expose your students in a controlled environment. Wake turbulence is no joke
Tower does a good job of warning everybody about wake turbulence, but I think pilots like myself have become complacent about the warnings, especially when we hear them so often and incidents like this one are so rare.
Picture of the Day: Pilots to the Rescue
Susan Loricchio submitted this photo and note: “Driving in to my local north Jersey airport, Essex County Airport, I spotted a pleasant surprise in the parking lot, causing me to flash an automatic grin. Some desperate animals are about to get a new lease on life. I was not only smiling for the rescued animals, but proud of the pilots and their support team who make it possible — everyday heroes in the pilot community.”
How can I ensure an FBO’s fuel is not contaminated?
I recommend that you let your plane sit for maybe a half hour or so after fueling before you do your fuel sump checks. That way if you did get some moisture or contaminates, you would have a better chance of spotting it.
