Women pilots will take off June 17, from H. L. Sonny Callahan Airport in Fairhope, Alabama, for a 2,426 statute mile competition across nine states that ends at Felts Field in Spokane, Washington.

The solar-powered system is called Simple, Affordable, Flexible, and Expandable Runway Status Lights (SAFE-RWSL). It uses Automatic Dependent Surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) data and computer vision to activate runway lights in real time.

Washington pilot earns Master Pilot Award

Pilot and airplane builder Harmon Lange received the FAA’s Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award on Dec. 19, 2024, recognizing over 50 years of safe flying and contributions to aviation. Lange, known for building six homebuilt airplanes and manufacturing landing gear for Van’s Aircraft and other aircraft, highlighted the importance of the friendships formed through aviation during the ceremony.
