I just want to correct a slight error in the article written by Meg Godlewski in the Feb. 11, 2005, issue titled “Flight of the Phoenix — 2004 vs. 1965.” Meg states that a C-82 was flown in both films. Although a C-82 was used in the original movie, the 2004 version used a C119K, also known as the “Flying Boxcar.” The actual C119K used in the 2004 movie now resides in Greybull, Wy. I have attached a photo of this unique aircraft with the movie paint scheme still on the plane (left). I was fortunate enough to view and to sit in the pilot’s seat during a recent trip to Greybull.
The attached photograph shows Pat and Joey McGillis in front of the C119. Pat was a young Air Force captain during Vietnam, flying 200 combat missions in the C119K Stinger Gunships.
I would suggest that GANews readers stop by Powers & Hawkins Aviation in Greybull when they are in the area. They have several unique aircraft to view.
