Rickenbacker International Airport in Columbus, Ohio, has been selected as the host airport for the Gathering of Mustangs & Legends, slated for Sept. 27-30, 2007.
The 1999 gathering at Kissimmee, Fla., brought together 65 P-51 Mustangs and 12 Legends for what was considered one of the great aviation events of the 20th Century.
Columbus is home of the 447th Composite Group/332 Fighter Wing, in which the Tuskegee Airmen flew P-51Cs in World War II. Rickenbacker International, which was Lockbourne Army Air Base during that war, also was a B-17 training base that produced many of the B-17 crews that Mustang pilots protected. The airport will celebrate its 65th anniversary in 2007 while hosting the 100 Mustangs and 51 Legends the gathering is expected to attract.
