BuildAPlane spooling up for Teachers Day at AirVenture

By Janice Wood · April 25, 2011 ·

BuildAPlane, in cooperation with the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), will once again sponsor Teacher’s Day at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, July 26, and will expose teachers to a variety of programs and curricula that assist in bringing aviation into classrooms. Elementary to high school teachers from across the United States are invited to participate at no charge.

“We are amazed by how many great opportunities are out there to use aviation to engage and motivate kids to learn,” says Lyn Freeman, BuildAPlane’s president. “Today’s students respond to real world applications and aviation really captures their attention.”

Teacher’s Day sessions will offer teachers materials available from private industry, the federal government and aviation organizations that enable students to experience all aspects of aviation, from vocation to avocation. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a number of hands-on presentations and to speak directly to program specialists. A wide variety of free take-home materials will be available for all attendees.

Participants who register and attend Teacher’s Day can obtain one graduate credit through Viterbo University. Lunch and a free one-day admission to AirVenture is also provided for each teacher that completes the course.

“It’s truly been an honor to watch Teacher’s Day grow over the years,” said Katrina Bradshaw, BuildAPlane’s executive director. “Last year, a group of students and teachers involved in a BuildAPlane project came all the way from several native Alaskan villages that are hundreds of miles from the nearest road. If you want to see just how committed to aviation America’s educators can be, come to Teacher’s Day at AirVenture!”

Organizations presenting material at BuildAPlane’s Teacher’s Day include the United States Department of Energy, the FAA, the National Air and Space Museum, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, EAA, GAMA and many others.

Registration for the free event is available at BuildAPlane.org. Space is limited. For more information: 804-843-3321.
