The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s Air Safety Institute has released an Early Analysis video looking at a recent incident with a Cessna 172S that included the loss of the propeller in flight.
On May 28, 2026, a Cessna 172S on a training flight from Rochester, New York, suffered smoke in the cockpit, loss of engine power, and a catastrophic engine failure that included propeller separation.
The aircraft safely landed, with the propeller found in a yard.
The 13-minute video, which includes ATC audio, explores the mission, the weather, the pilot, and what other general aviation pilots can learn from the incident.
