Jeff DeFreest submitted this photo and note: “A Cessna Skywagon on Edo 2960 floats in remote Southeast Alaska. After being socked in a few days at Kook Lake on the Tongass National Forest, the weather was finally lifting enough to enable safely taking off and climbing to altitude to contact the nearest FSS and get a weather briefing for the flight home.”

Picture of the Day: A 1940 Funk returns home

By General Aviation News Staff · February 25, 2021 ·

Dan Mersel submitted this photo and note: “This 1940 model B75L Funk, N24170, which has now been owned for two years, had been previously restored on the West Coast. The original plan was to fly it to its new home at Sawyer County Airport (KHYR) in Hayward, Wisconsin. Because of its limited range, resulting from a fuel tank with only 13 gallons of useable capacity, and due to the higher terrain that the flight would have traversed, it was instead disassembled and transported by truck to KHYR. During its restoration, the engine, which was a 75-hp Lycoming G0-145, was upgraded to a Continental C85.”

Picture of the Day: Winter bird

By General Aviation News Staff · February 24, 2021 ·

Harry Fenton submitted this photo and note: “Our white Champ resting at Bob Hilbert’s airstrip near Marengo, Illinois, after a day of skiplane flying. Some of the best flying of the year is during the middle of the winter with the plane on skis. Landing on frozen lakes and open fields next to farm homes are off-airport fun that can only be experienced during the winter. Despite the cold, if the sun is out, the radiant glow of the sun makes for some ‘warm’ winter days that only northern people understand.”
