According to a preliminary NTSB report, the airplane took off over dark water with no discernable horizon, then began a shallow climb and a right turn. “It seems possible that this is a classic spatial disorientation accident due to somatogravic illusion, triggered by accelerating in situations without good visual references,” AOPA officials said.

College flying competition takes off in Oshkosh

Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics has introduced an all-digital version of the company’s 2-inch standby package. The new, digital standby family features the company’s Flex Attitude Indicator, Flex Counter Drum Encoding Altimeter, and Flex Airspeed Indicator. All three are AML STC’d on more than 180 aircraft models.
