The Virginia Air & Space Center, a museum at Hampton, Virginia, honored its 174 volunteers and docents at a March 24 Volunteer Recognition Celebration. Included in the ceremony was the Volunteer of the Year award, which went to Herb Johnston, as well as recognition of other volunteers for their 2008 contributions.
Johnston joined the Volunteer Corps in February of 1992 as a member of the museum’s first docent class. “His presentations on space exploration and the challenges of being an astronaut have been – and still are – both dynamic and flawless,” said Ken Flick, who runs the volunteer program.
“After more than 16 years of service, the Virginia Air & Space Center’s volunteer program continues to provide crucial support of daily operations,” Flick said. “Last year, 174 docents or volunteers contributed 11,184 hours of service and participated in Center activities on 2,882 occasions.”
