Supersonic soda for cola Concorde

By Frederick Johnsen · August 28, 2024 · 3 Comments

One of the battles in the “cola wars” involved painting a Concorde supersonic transport in Pepsi colors.

Hyperbole and hokum in the air

By Jamie Beckett · August 27, 2024 · 17 Comments

A well-managed traffic pattern can handle a dozen aircraft or more at one time without undue risk to safety or efficiency. Plug one ego-driven pilot into that scenario and things can get really exciting, really fast.

A proud passenger

It was an absolute joy to watch Brenna as pilot in command. From preflight to shutdown and securing of the aircraft — and everything in between — she was in command.

Partnerships for prosperity

By Jamie Beckett · August 20, 2024 · 5 Comments

Many small GA airports are the home to a few dozen or maybe a couple hundred aircraft owners who use the facility with great affection but little beneficial impact to the public at large. That reality doesn’t bring joy to the hearts and minds of the folks who perceive their tax dollars as being wasted on grass cutting, taxiway refurbishment, or a new FBO building.

Are the movement areas and ground operations also affected by the TFR?

We in the U.S. have the remarkable freedom to fly an aircraft from coast to coast in airspace that asks virtually nothing of us. We’re not required to communicate, so a disquieting number of us simply don’t.

An airplane for people who don’t fly airplanes

By Ben Sclair · August 12, 2024 · 46 Comments

Personally, I’ve often wondered how an airplane would be designed if Orville and Wilbur had started their efforts today.

Sustaining general aviation

By Ben Sclair · August 7, 2024 · 2 Comments

Each year the FAA forecasts the number of aircraft they predict will be in the general aviation fleet over the next 20 year period. This table is from the 2024 forecast.

All the data I’ve found seems to point to a General Aviation inventory just over 200,000. And it has been there for a few decades.
