The pilot’s failure to locate the airport, which resulted in an approach to a road and subsequent collision with power lines during a go-around in low-light conditions.
Picture of the Day: A Heavenly view
Wayne Maynard submitted this photo and note: “This photo was taken on a return flight from Houston on an Angel Flight South Central mission. I transported a patient from their home to MD Anderson Cancer Center for cancer treatment. I have flown 240 mission legs over the past 17 years and have served as chairman of the organization for five years.”
Failing to take in the big picture
We will all make mistakes. Many in fact. But if we insist on buffaloing into any and all situations as we see fit, something bad is likely to be the result one day. And it won’t just be the risk of ever seeing Michael J. Fox in person again and having to apologize for blowing a shot in a movie. It might be something much worse and tragically irreversible. A result we will have to live with forevermore, if we survive the experience at all.

Million Air takes over FBO at KBHM
Plans at the Birmingham airport include a 10,000-square-foot terminal to serve pilots, aircraft owners and guests, military, and corporate business travelers; a 24,000-square-foot hangar designed for smaller, privately owned aircraft; and two 30,000-square-foot corporate hangars.
Training flight ends with sputtering engine
I have always wondered if I’d freeze or forget things in a situation like that and my training really kicked in. My safety pilot said he never felt nervous or afraid and I sounded like a pro. On the inside I felt pretty calm and in troubleshooting and flying mode. But when I landed I got out of the plane and was shaking.
Pictures of the Day: The beauty of the Monocoupe
Ted Luebber sent in these photos with a note: “I spotted this beautiful clipped wing Monocoupe in the hangar at JKE Works, formerly Jim Kimball Enterprises, in Zellwood, Florida. It is a Model 110 and sports a 185-hp Warner engine. It was originally built in 1933 and restored by Jim Kimball Enterprises 30 years ago.”
Taildragger dreams
When Bill Walker started flying, he had many aviation-related dreams, including having his own runway. He’s achieved that one and so many more as he built up his hours as a tailwheel pilot.
