The The Ninety‑Nines, Inc. was founded on November 2, 1929, by 26 licensed U.S. women pilots who met at Curtiss Field in Valley Stream, New York.  They chose the name “Ninety-Nines” because 99 of the 117 licensed female pilots at the time signed up as charter members.  Their mission: advance women in aviation through fellowship, education, and mutual support — a mission still active today.

Picture of the Day: Celebrating 95 years
The Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots recently celebrated its 95th year at the Oklahoma Capitol dome. Established in 1929 by 99 women pilots to promote the “advancement of aviation through education, scholarships, and mutual support while honoring our unique history and sharing our passion for flight,” the organization’s first president was Amelia Earhart. The 99s have been based in Oklahoma since 1955.
Wally Funk to be honored at American Valor event
Funk was one of the Mercury 13 — a group of women who underwent the same rigorous astronaut testing as their male counterparts in the early 1960s, but didn’t achieve her dream of space travel until July 20, 2021 — 52 years to the date from Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s first steps on the moon. At the age of 82, Funk finally launched into space, setting a Guinness World Record as the oldest person to journey beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

The Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots has received a $1 million bequest from the son of one of the founding members of the group.
Fundraising begins for new 99s award
The Beverley D. Sharp Aviation Diversity Award, named in honor of a past president of the 99s, who was a member of the Washington, D.C., chapter, aims to “recognize and promote programs and efforts that increase the participation of individuals from diverse backgrounds in aviation,” according to 99s officials.
2023 Katherine Wright trophy goes to Julie Clark
Clark is being honored for her “significant contributions to the art and sport of aviation, the success of others, and the promotion of aerospace education for more than a half-century,” according to officials.
