A rainy stop in Watertown

By Janice Wood · June 28, 2010 ·

Young aviation enthusiasts enjoy the WACO YKS at Watertown.

Stearman pilot Sarah Wilson, who is participating in the American Barnstormers Tour, files this report from the tour’s third stop, Watertown Regional Airport (ATY) in Watertown, S.D., on June 23: If you tie the plane down, the wind will die, if you cover the cockpit it won’t rain, if you are schedule to stop in Watertown for only one day, you’ll want to stay for three.

Ride haulers uncover their planes after the morning rain clears in Watertown.

We led a flight of seven through the showers just in time for rain and pancakes in the hangar. Even with the morning showers crowds were waiting, tucked under wings and hangar doors. What a beautiful airport, two long smooth runways right on the edge of the lake. We flew rides all day and the Stearman sold out of slots by 3 p.m. At the airport BBQ that evening, we all agreed our visit to Watertown was much too short…good thing is, it means we have to come back.
