CubCrafters has released a performance-enhancing FADEC software upgrade for CubCrafters aircraft powered by the Rotax 916 iS engine.
Developed by Luke Czepiela in collaboration with RS Flight Systems, the software update delivers improvements in overall aircraft performance while maintaining the simplicity and reliability of the Rotax engine platform, according to CubCrafters officials.
Czepiela, a Red Bull Air Race pilot and STOL pilot, is known for his use of Carbon Cub aircraft in numerous Red Bull projects, demonstrations, and performances around the globe. Among his many accomplishments, Czepiela made international headlines with his historic Bullseye Landing of a specially prepared Carbon Cub atop the helipad of Dubai’s iconic Burj Al Arab hotel — one of the most challenging precision aviation feats ever accomplished, according to CubCrafters officials.
Drawing on years of experience operating high-performance aircraft in demanding environments, Czepiela worked with RS Flight Systems to refine the Rotax 916 iS engine management software and unlock additional performance across the Carbon Cub UL’s flight envelope.
According to CubCrafters officials, pilots can expect:
- Quicker acceleration during takeoff and go-around operations
- Improved climb performance and increased cruise speed
- Improved deceleration and energy management.

Unlike traditional performance modifications that require hardware changes, the upgrade is accomplished entirely through software, company officials added.
“Luke has accumulated thousands of hours operating Carbon Cub aircraft in some of the most demanding flying environments imaginable,” said Brad Damm, Vice President of CubCrafters. “His deep understanding of the aircraft, combined with the engineering expertise of RS Flight Systems, has resulted in a software enhancement that makes an already remarkable airplane even more responsive and capable. Pilots will notice the difference from the moment they advance the throttle. This upgrade isn’t just about better performance numbers — it’s about actually making the airplane even more fun to fly.”
“The Rotax 916 iS is already an incredible engine, but we saw opportunities to further optimize how it delivers power throughout the flight envelope,” said Czepiela. “The goal wasn’t simply to increase performance on paper. We wanted to make the aircraft feel more responsive and enjoyable to fly. Whether you’re accelerating for takeoff, climbing into the mountains, cruising cross-country, or setting up for a short-field landing, pilots will notice the difference.”
The upgrade has been evaluated in CubCrafters aircraft equipped with both Hartzell and MT propellers and is now available for eligible CubCrafters Rotax 916 iS-powered models.
The Rotax 916 iS Performance Software Upgrade is available immediately from CubCrafters for $1,500.
