Oceano Airport adds AWOS

By Ben Sclair · May 10, 2018 ·

Good things come to those who wait. At least that’s how the saying goes. Seven years after they started, California’s Oceano Airport (L52) in San Luis Obispo has an operating Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS). “The system is currently in test mode,” notes airport evangelist Mitch Latting. “But data is available on 118.375 and 805-489-1305.”

The dash of SUN ‘n FUN

By Ben Sclair · May 3, 2018 ·

The 2018 SUN ‘n FUN fly-in ended much the same as it started…with a torrent of rain and wind. Those two weather features make any outdoor event rather untenable. But as I was driving to Sarasota to see family on Monday after the fly-in closed early on Sunday, I found myself lost in thought. While the […]

How do you recommend getting started learning to fly?

By Ben Sclair · April 22, 2018 ·

Cessna 150 Learn To Fly

“I thought your platform would help me figure out how introduce the following idea to my husband,” began the email that appeared in my email box on April 15. “I’m just beginning in my quest to find flying lessons to give to him as a gift. He’s a semi-retired software engineer (I’ve got to tell you, the […]

Lyman Ward Military Academy makes the grade

By Ben Sclair · April 12, 2018 ·

Since 1898, the Lyman Ward Military Academy has been molding boys into men. New for the 2018-2019 academic year, the boarding school in Camp Hill, Ala., has added flight training to its list of activities and academic offerings. The three students enrolled in the nascent flight training program are at SUN ‘n FUN with two […]

Godspeed Mary Rosenblum

By Ben Sclair · April 9, 2018 ·

On March 15 I opened my email and found the following message from Stephanie Smith: “Many years ago (2012 to be exact), my husband, Dennis, and I met you during the Minam Airlift, based in Joseph, Oregon, to deliver supplies to Minam Lodge. My husband was president of the Oregon Pilots Association at the time, […]

Video: Historic South Carolina hangar gets a new lease on life

By Ben Sclair · April 9, 2018 ·

Hamilton-Owens Airport's Curtiss-Wright Hangar gets a new lease on life.

The historic Curtiss-Wright Hangar at Hamilton-Owens Field in South Carolina is on the National Register of Historic Places. That makes it difficult — but not impossible — to breath new life into. But that is exactly what’s happened. South Carolina ETV produced a nice video that offers some historical perspective, as well as an update on […]

Good things are happening, just look around

By Ben Sclair · March 28, 2018 ·

If you can break yourself away from the breathless stream of negative news that invades our collective inbox (digital and physical) it becomes rather easy to see all the good that is happening around us. Don’t believe me? A new Ranger on duty From the mind — and wallet — of a successful entrepreneur by […]

Out of sight and sound

By Ben Sclair · March 15, 2018 ·

I can’t imagine letting any of my kids fly an ultralight at 13 years old. And yet that is exactly what my parents let me do. Granted, I grew up on an airport and had flown with my Dad for years by the time I was 13. Training in the single-seat Robert B1-RD consisted of […]

Book: Vertical Horizons dives into the history of Canada’s Okanagan Helicopters

By Ben Sclair · March 10, 2018 ·

Vertical Horizons

From a humble start (aren’t they all though?) Okanagan Helicopters has a remarkable history that includes, “the first unaccompanied commercial helicopter ferry flight from Canada to the UK, monitoring polar bears in the High Arctic, providing offshore oil rig support during monsoons, and, at the company’s high point, operations in over 33 countries with 600 […]
