Ask Paul: The real concern about not changing your airplane’s oil

By Paul McBride · September 14, 2022 ·

A lot of people believe the recommended oil change intervals is something the oil companies push in order to sell more oil. It’s obvious that they’ve never seen the inside of an engine that has had infrequent oil changes and the damage caused by corrosion.

Career counseling with confidence

By Jamie Beckett · September 13, 2022 ·

When a teen says they want to be a pilot, too often authority figures shoot down that dream, telling them they aren’t smart enough. Or that they are too short, too tall, the wrong gender, or color. That’s why it’s so important for every one in general aviation to encourage teens to pursue their dreams of flight.

Van’s RV-15 debuts to Oshkosh crowds

By Dan Johnson · September 8, 2022 ·

And it’s a high wing model. The bare aluminum glistened in bright sunlight and drew crowds through every day of the OSH22.

Debrief OSH22, prebrief OSH23

By Ben Sclair · September 7, 2022 ·

If flying into AirVenture seems like a fun challenge, there is no time like the present to debrief OSH22 flights and to prebrief for OSH23. By the time you read this, there’ll be less than 11 months left before EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2023 kicks off.

I think, therefore I am infallible

By Jamie Beckett · September 6, 2022 ·

This pilot called quite a few people to complain about ATC denying her a right that was guaranteed to her by her desire to land on a specific runway and her 40 years of flight experience. And yes, you read that right. She considered it a right that she should be allowed to land on the runway of her choice. A curiously confusing bit of logic considering the Federal Aviation Regulations quite clearly state that flying is a privilege, not a right.

Ask Paul: What is this mystery engine?

By Paul McBride · September 5, 2022 ·

It’s best to do your research before buying an airplane with an engine you aren’t familiar with.

Does this low-time aircraft engine really need an overhaul?

By Paul McBride · September 4, 2022 ·

Mark’s problem is a good example of a situation that is common in the world today. And with the cost of avgas these days, we’re entering a time where more and more aircraft will be idle for long periods of time — and the results could possibly be even worse than what Mark has seen.

Questions from the Cockpit: In defense of running out of gas

By William E. Dubois · August 31, 2022 ·

While I agree that it sure seems like a lot of airplanes are running out of gas, to be honest, I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often. And the reason for that boils down to two issues: First, there’s no way to know how much gas you have in your tanks, and second, there’s no way to know how much gas you’ll need for your flight.

A mentor flies west

By Jamie Beckett · August 30, 2022 ·

I hope everyone who reads this memorial has the good fortune in life to meet their own Dave. Someone who cares for us and guides us, not because they’re expected to, but because they can.
