Questions from the Cockpit: Color me confused

Sammi, a student pilot in Arizona, writes: Next door to my flight school is a ritzy FBO (where I score my morning coffee) that has one of those electric maps in the lobby with colored lights that show the flight conditions across the nation – green for VFR, blue for MVFR, red for IFR, and magenta for LIFR. So cool and so beautiful! But…also so confusing. Uncle Google gave me the ceilings and vis’es for the various flight conditions, but I can’t seem to find them in the regs. What’s the story here?

Cessna 172 Familiarization Course released

The online, multimedia course is “designed to quickly familiarize current or future pilots with the features, limitations, and operating characteristics of the Cessna 172,” according to company officials. “Using 172N and 172S models as sample airplanes, important aircraft systems, limitations, and maneuvers are covered.”

Go-around goes awry for Alaska pilot

The pilot’s loss of control on go-around in gusting crosswind conditions. Contributing to the accident was the pilot’s decision to attempt to land at a short off-airport landing site with a malfunctioning airspeed indicator.
