Ask Paul: Troubleshooting engine problems requires specific information

By Paul McBride · June 9, 2024 ·

Anytime you are asking a question regarding a Lycoming engine, it’s much easier for me to respond if I have a specific engine model and serial number. Any maintenance history on the engine is also helpful, especially when troubleshooting a condition that has recently changed in the operation of the engine. I will never fault anyone for providing too much information.

Should I preheat the oil in my aircraft engine during the winter?

By Paul McBride · December 21, 2023 ·

Question for Paul McBride, the General Aviation News engines expert: I saw your recent column, “Should I pre-oil these Lycoming engines?,” and I was wondering does CamGuard help? Cold oil doesn’t splash very well, so how about pre-heating the engine and oil?

Should I pre-oil these Lycoming engines?

By Paul McBride · December 11, 2023 ·

My guess is that you want to eliminate any possibility of internal lack of lubrication during engine start-up. As I mentioned previously, since the cam and tappet area are only served by splash oil, if you really want to focus on that area and keeping it in the best of health, here are a few suggestions.
