Close call blamed on lack of radar

The tower at KFNL is temporary and has no current access to radar but relies on visual observation from the ground level. Though radar has been installed, it has not been certified for almost a year now due to FAA-imposed Covid restrictions.

NTSB: CTAF should be required in Alaska

The recommendations come after an NTSB investigation into a midair collision involving a deHavilland DHC-2 and a Piper PA-12 that occurred on July 31, 2020, near Soldotna, Alaska. The pilot and five passengers on the DHC-2 were killed in the collision, as was the pilot on the PA-12.

Ice Light Window now available for King Airs

Now available is the PWI Ice Light Window, which is designed for almost a dozen King Air models to improve ice detection, as well as enhancing the range of view around the aircraft, according to company officials.

Michael Kilcher submitted this photo and note: “A number of fellow pilots and I rendezvoused at the Sport Island Pub on the Great Sacandaga Lake in upstate New York. We dropped in for lunch at this lakeside restaurant. This was my first time landing on the ice in my wheeled Cessna 172. Along with my 172 are a pair of PA-12 Super Cruisers and a pair of Cubs, all on skis. Not pictured, but part of our group that day, are a Cessna 185 on retractable wheel-skis and a Bell 206B.”

High winds hamper crowds at Cactus Fly-In

High winds prohibited some planes from coming in to the 64th annual Cactus Fly-In and Hot Rod Show, held March 5, 2022, at Casa Grande Municipal Airport (KCGZ) in Arizona, “yet dozens did show up along with several show cars,” says Glenn Brasch of AirportCourtesyCars.com and a frequent contributor of photographs to General Aviation News.

New flight ops team for Reno
