The flight instructor and student pilot’s inadequate preflight performance planning which resulted in a takeoff attempt with insufficient available runway, a loss of control, and impact with terrain.
Picture of the Day: A different vantage point
Lincoln Benedict sent in this photo with a note: “Weather on Thanksgiving 2022 on the east coast was delightful, allowing my wife and I to see both sides of the family via General Aviation. For a special treat, LaGuardia Tower cleared us into the Bravo airspace to fly down the East River and see New York City from a different vantage point. Thanks to all those who worked on Thanksgiving to give us this privilege.”
It’s the gear that gets us
The truth is pilots can adopt procedures that, if followed, would prevent most gear-up events. We should, too. Fewer insurance claims result in lower insurance costs. Fewer gear-ups also means fewer runway closures. Everybody wins.
Florida airport offers incentives for pilots to buy UL94 fuel
The Naples Airport Authority (NAA) Board of Commissioners unanimously approved incentives to offset the higher cost of UL 94 at the Naples Airport. The subsidies cut the cost of UL 94 nearly in half, making it equal in price to leaded aviation gasoline. The airport also will offer eligible aircraft based at Naples a $250 one-time credit to complete the FAA required certification for the unleaded STC.
Vets 2 Wings: A win-win solution
In October 2022, the university was awarded $2.5 million in a cooperative agreement from the FAA to assist U.S. military veterans with paying for flight training and providing extra support to ensure a successful transition to the airline workforce.
Sporty’s offers limited edition Cirrus SR22 model
The model is a replica of an SR22 based at Sporty’s/Clermont County Airport (I69) in Ohio and the only 1:72 scale Cirrus SR22 ever made available, according to Sporty’s officials.
Near miss in pattern teaches student many lessons
I began my turn to downwind while looking for the traffic expecting it to be in the upwind. Instead the other pilot had made their crosswind turn closer to the runway and had cut me off while climbing. Luckily they were in a SR22 and at a higher altitude than mine, but they were right in front of me, taking up almost my entire windshield. While they may have been slightly too high for us to collide, I feared for my safety considering how close they were and pulled power to idle immediately and initiated a descent.
Picture of the Day: A place I call my own
Anh Tran submitted this photo and note: “There is a place I call my own, where I can stand by the sea, and look beyond the things I’ve known, and dream that I might be free.”
More questions than answers surround unleaded fuel
An update on the Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions (EAGLE) initiative shows that even with years of research, there is still so much we don’t know about how general aviation piston airplanes will fly with the new fuel — or even when it will be available for widespread testing by aircraft manufacturers and engine makers.
