DIY Is Where It’s At

By Jamie Beckett · February 17, 2026 · 4 Comments

Building an airplane teaches kids so much more than the names of airplane parts. They develop the ability to work as part of a cohesive team. Real world problem solving is a constant feature of the program. They even get to wrestle with financial considerations of damaged parts needing to be repaired or replaced. There will be damaged parts. Believe me.

What’s Your Favorite Airplane?

By Jamie Beckett · February 10, 2026 · 41 Comments

For columnist Jamie Beckett, the answer varies, but always comes back to the one airplane he wishes he could own again — and the one he couldn’t wait to get away from.

Dinner And A Movement

By committing themselves to a mission that has legs, EAA Chapter 1240 hasn’t just embarked on a plan that makes them feel good about themselves. Aviation ain’t what it used to be

By Jamie Beckett · January 6, 2026 · 15 Comments

Nope, aviation ain’t what it used to be. Frankly, it’s better. Much better. It’s more affordable, more accessible, more dependable, and far less prone to failures than it was in the past.

What if trivia isn’t trivial at all?

Would a Trivial Pursuit version that focuses on aviation help expand pilot knowledge?

It’s a money thing. Or is it?

By Jamie Beckett · December 23, 2025 · 5 Comments

Like so many who ultimately succeed in obtaining a pilot certificate, I struggled for years with limited funds, unproductive flight lessons, less than helpful instructors, and flight schools that were happy to accept my payments while putting little effort into helping me achieve my stated goal. That story is all too common. Those of us who persevere, however, tend to learn a valuable lesson.
